Water Baptism

At GHOP, we believe that water baptism is a significant and essential step in the believer's journey of faith. Baptism by immersion is not only a direct commandment from our Lord but also a profound declaration of one's commitment to following Christ. It symbolizes the Christian's identification with Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection, affirming our transformation and new life in Him.

Biblical Foundations

The practice of water baptism is richly woven throughout the Scriptures. We look to passages such as:
  • Matthew 28:19: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
  • Romans 6:4: "We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
  • Colossians 2:12: "Having been buried with Him in baptism and raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead."
  • Acts 8:36-39: The account of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch beautifully illustrates the importance of baptism as a public proclamation of faith.

Baptismal Formula

At GHOP, we adhere to a specific baptismal formula that reflects our faith and the command of our Lord: "On the confession of your faith in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and in Jesus Name. Amen." This formula encapsulates the essence of our belief in the Trinity and the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Who Can Be Baptized?

Water baptism is for believers only. It is a personal commitment to live according to the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of His Word. Before being baptized, individuals must publicly profess their faith in Christ, signifying their desire to enter into a deeper relationship with Him.

The Experience of Baptism

The act of baptism is both a profound personal experience and a communal celebration. It serves as a wonderful opportunity for family, friends, and the church community to witness and support the individual's commitment to Christ. As the individual is submerged in water, it symbolizes the washing away of their old life, and as they rise again, it signifies the new life they have received through faith in Jesus.

Testimony

As a mother of an incredible autistic young man, witnessing his desire for baptism filled me with joy and gratitude for how far he has come. The moment I baptized him, lowering him into the water and raising him up to new life in Christ, was profoundly moving and affirmed my faith in God's promise of love and acceptance for everyone. I am grateful for the support from our community at GHOP as we celebrate this milestone and embrace the beautiful journey ahead. - MaSheeka Bone
